Tiger On The Loose!

In the late 1890’s, a farmer in Victoria Cross discovered a tiger in his barn, threatening his animals. The nearest weapon was a pitchfork, and acting instinctively, the farmer managed to stab the tiger and kill it.

How did this happen? As it turned out the tiger had escaped from a travelling circus. The circus was going to Montague from Charlottetown and was taking a shortcut from Highway 3 thru Greenfield and then onto Montague. The farmer’s name was Nicholson, and his farm was the second property up the Greenfield road before Victoria Cross.

And, we have to remember that bears were still a threat to farm livestock in that time frame. When Mr Nicholson heard the commotion in his barn, he would have acted very quickly and decisively.
