Garden of the Gulf Museum The Railway Comes to Montague

Highlights the Coming of the Railway to Montague.

The train exhibit is a history of the railway coming to Montague and how it impacted the economic growth of Montague. The first official train pulled into the station in 1906. You can still view the “old” train station and turnstile across the river from the museum’s upper windows.

The rail line on Prince Edward Island officially closed on 31 December 1989 with the rails being removed between 1990 and 1992. The rail lines, now grass and gravel, became the Confederation Trail – a popular walking and biking trail extending tip to tip on the Island. If you have the time, the “rail line” can be walked from the former station to Shaw’s Lane along the Montague River. It is especially lovely in the evening lit by period-style lamp posts to guide your way.
