The Garden of the Gulf Museum is PEI’s oldest community museum, established on May 16th 1958 by the former Governor General of Canada, Vincent Massey. It is located in an historical building that once housed the post office and customs office, including a third floor residence. We have a variety of artifacts and displays including: an old general store and school house display; Mi’kmaq artifacts; historic pictures of the town of Montague; and lots more to explore within 3 floors of exhibits.

Hello. I’m researching my family genealogy and came across your museum in the hope I can look at my family records housed with you. My mother’s name is Margaret Mary Power and my father’s name is Albert Edward Murphy. They and their parents and grandparents etc are from Summerville. For example, I understand my grandmother’s memoriam is in the Garden of the Gulf newspaper dateds April 20, 1946, page 9. And, I’m sure there are many more records to find. May I go to your museum before your July summer hours? My Murphy side is having a reunion in early August this summer.

Genealogy inquires to visit the Artifactory are taken by appointment even during the summer months when the Museum is open to the public. If you wish to get an appointment before July, please email info@gardenofthegulfmuseum.ca and the manager may be able to help you with a time. Explain you are doing research on your Summerville ancestors prior to the Murphy reunion in August.
We have quite a lot of local “Family” information but do not have a newspaper? Perhaps you are referring to the Guardian? Another good resource is The Island Register: https://www.islandregister.com/gindex.html. Might be worth checking these out too.
