Airplane Madness

When I was ten or eleven, an aeroplane landed in the field behind our barns around noon, and all the school kids from Victoria Cross left school that afternoon to see it.

It was a Dehavelin Moth and flown by Harry Hayter, an ex-World War I pilot, and later a well-known bush pilot out west. He was from Murray Harbour way. It was a two-seater open bi-plane.

For $3.50 he took my brother Bruce and I for a short flight around and over Montague. I can remember when it was banking to turn over Montague, you could see right to the bottom of the river, but Bruce was too afraid to look over the side. After, he took my father up for nothing for the use of the field to take others up that afternoon.
